DesignEdge product wins international award

A product featuring industrial design from Cambridge company DesignEdge has won an international award for design excellence.

The PROPRIO FOOT™ by Ossur, the world’s first intelligent foot, won the Gold 2007 Medical Design Excellence Award in the category of rehabilitation and assistive technology products at a ceremony in New York. The awards are presented by Canon Communications LLC (Los Angeles) and sponsored by Medical Device & Diagnostic Industry magazine.

The PROPRIO FOOT by Ossur is the first prosthetic foot to include built-in electronics that respond automatically to changing terrain. DesignEdge worked with Ossur’s designers in the concept stage on ideas for the design of the external forms. When Ossur had finalized the design, DesignEdge completed the design of the external mouldings and product keypad making them ready for production.

Says DesignEdge’s Alasdair Barnett: “Our aim was to produce a design that was visually striking and that maximized performance for the user. Because the foot was replacing something that was ergonomic and felt natural to use, i.e. a real foot, the design had to be unobtrusive and intuitive, giving the user back their ability to walk normally without the hassle from a hard to operate product. We are delighted that the resulting design has won this award.”

DesignEdge was set up 15 years ago by industrial designers Alasdair Barnett and Bruce Hutchison. It offers a complete design and engineering service to both local and national companies, taking designs through from initial sketches all the way to manufacture.
